This delay pedal is an essential tool for creating space, depth, and rhythmic complexity in a guitar signal. This circuit is designed around the PT2399, a legendary CMOS echo processor prized by the DIY community for its unique ability to bridge the gap between digital precision and analog warmth.
By utilizing the PT2399’s internal ADC/DAC and 44Kb of RAM, this pedal offers a lush, "lo-fi" delay character that naturally degrades as the repeats fade—mimicking the coveted sound of vintage bucket-brigade (BBD) or tape echo units.
To provide maximum versatility, this design features three primary controls that allow the player to sculpt the echo's behavior:
1. Time (Delay Length)
This potentiometer controls the clock frequency of the PT2399.
The Range: It adjusts the interval between the original note and the first repeat.
The Character: At shorter settings, the pedal produces tight "slapback" echoes. At longer settings, the PT2399 introduces a charming, grainy texture to the repeats, a signature trait that has made this chip a favorite for "boutique" ambient and psychedelic pedals.
2. Repeat (Feedback)
The Repeat control determines how much of the delayed signal is fed back into the input of the PT2399.
Subtle to Self-Oscillation: At lower settings, you get a single, clean repeat. As the knob is turned up, the echoes stack and trail off into the distance.
The "Space" Factor: Pushing this control to its limit allows the circuit to enter self-oscillation, creating the swelling, chaotic soundscapes synonymous with experimental rock.
3. Blend (Wet/Dry Mix)
The Blend control acts as the mixer for the circuit.
The Mechanism: It balances your "dry" (unaffected) guitar signal with the "wet" (delayed) signal.
The Result: This allows you to keep your core tone punchy and clear while sitting the echoes subtly in the background, or to wash the signal completely in a sea of delay.
While modern DSP (Digital Signal Processing) chips can produce perfect, "sterile" repeats, the PT2399 is beloved because it isn't perfect. It adds a slight, musical filtering to each successive repeat, ensuring that the delay never gets in the way of your playing. It is the ideal engine for a delay pedal that feels alive, organic, and deeply responsive to the player’s touch.
